If you had reviewed my high school academic record, “future speaker or leadership consultant” would not have appeared on the bingo card. If my guidance counsellor had projected my trajectory, she would have foreseen a quiet, unremarkable path, or even jail.
Fast-forward a few decades: I found myself hosting a formal Red Cross dinner, seated alongside Alberta’s Premier, a future Lieutenant Governor, and Her Royal Highness Princess Margriet of the Netherlands. If my high school counsellor could see that seating plan, she would have been completely bewildered.
I’m in good company. John McCain graduated near the bottom of his class at the Naval Academy and used to joke, “I made the top two-thirds of the class possible.” He knew that being at the bottom of the curve was his starting point, not his destination.
Your starting point does not define your horizon.
The Real Crisis Isn’t Technical
When we look at today’s shifting landscape, we aren’t facing a technological crisis; we’re facing a leadership crisis.
Leadership isn’t a grade point average or a software tool.
It’s a choice.
Consider history: Over 80 years ago, young men in their teens and twenties crossed the English Channel to storm the beaches of Normandy. They didn’t have their lives mapped out by algorithms or personal-branding plans; they stood shoulder to shoulder, faced a terrifying challenge, and held the line.
By contrast, today we live in a world of immense material comfort that encourages us to isolate ourselves and go it alone. Yet the world’s hard problems are never solved alone.
True Leadership Happens in the Empty Space
In the military, we know no plan survives first contact with reality. When uncertainty rolls in, technology doesn’t hold the line—people do.
Real leadership isn’t frictionless, and it doesn’t happen on a dashboard.
Real leadership is forged in the messy spaces where playbooks fall short:
- Frictionless is outsourcing a difficult conversation to a screen.
Leadership is sitting across the table, delivering tough truths with human grace.
- Frictionless is hiding behind a spreadsheet of metrics.
Leadership steps in front of the failure, takes the hit, and protects your team while you rebuild.
- Frictionless is letting the algorithm choose the path.
Leadership is pausing to declare that the data shows what’s easy, but our values show what’s right.
Build the Foundation
You are not an entry-level line worker waiting to be replaced by code. You are the architects of the culture that shapes those tools.
Routine tasks will never measure your ultimate value. It will be measured by your judgment, character, and ability to build trust when people are anxious.
Reject the advice to sacrifice your humanity to fuel a corporate machine. Instead, build a foundation that holds up under pressure. Take care of your peers, own your mission, and be the leader who brings clarity to chaos.
When you get through the grind of the real world, find the people who helped you get there, sit down, and celebrate.
You will have earned it.
